Profile: Nazir Ahmad Shirzai

Nazir Ahmad Shirzai arrived from Afghanistan two years ago and was recently referred to our CalWorks program. He has had to overcome numerous challenges and a lack of work experience in the U.S. He started ESL classes to improve his English proficiency while simultaneously learning new skills to prepare him for work. Given his experience back home, he enrolled in an Auto Body Technician apprenticeship program to learn more. In the interim, Monument Impact helped Nazir secure employment with Amazon Flex and Uber. He is able to support his family and develop his future goals while continuing his training.

Going the Extra Mile

To help prepare clients for work, our case manager also identifies individual needs such as:

    • Opening a bank account
    • Networking with the Afghan community for support and resources
    • Application assistance for jobs, low-income housing, rent assistance, benefits, driver’s license (driving permit test preparation and resources to help clients for DMV driving test)
    • Identifying resources to support the family while building employment skills
