Mentes Positivas en Acción

About MPA

Mentes Positivas en Acción is an 8-week class that provides tools to manage stress, reduce symptoms of depression and improve mood. The program was created with Rosa Maria Sternberg, PhD, RN, while on faculty at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), to address health disparities among Latino immigrants. MPA’s curriculum is evidence-based and tailored to be culturally sensitive and linguistically relevant. Dr. Sternberg evaluates MPA’s health outcomes annually.

Trust is a critical component of MPA. The success lies in the program being delivered by trained community members – promotores – who bring lived experience to their position. Participants’ input is encouraged throughout program delivery and integrated into the curriculum.

MPA is offered year-round. The 8-week curriculum is led by a team of two promotores and includes the following topics:

  • Understanding Stress and Depression
  • Utilizing relaxation techniques
  • Understanding and managing problems and perceived reality
  • Understanding the relationship between thoughts, emotions, and behavior
  • Learning how to work with ‘automatic’ thoughts
  • The role of optimism and altruism in happiness, health and well-being
